27 Reasons to Love San Diego

hero-image-San-Diego-skyline-dusk

As a native of San Diego, I have been fortunate to grow up surrounded by the beauty American’s Finest City has to offer. With our breathtaking views, growing economy and perfect weather, San Diego is home to a lifestyle found very few places on the planet.

San Diego Magazine has recently published the “27 Reasons to Love San Diego,” and I found myself nodding along as I read the article. What makes San Diego loveable is the reason we are also envied. It’s an exciting time for our region with continued growth, cultural enhancements and architecture. Gone is the little sleepy beach town with a downtown you didn’t dare enter. The enhancements to San Diego continue to impress this native. Regardless of where the planes may take me around the globe, there is no place like home!

Are You The Architect Of Your Own Life?

Permission Chapter 1

In Chapter 1 of my book, Permission: Stop Competing & Start Creating the Life You Want to Live, I ask the reader if they are the “architect of your own life?” On the surface, it seems easy to say yes because you have checked the box on the work, the relationships and the dreams you have. But I would challenge you to probe a little deeper. Do you drive to work dreading your job? Are you in a relationship that is “fine” but not extraordinary? Just because there is nothing wrong in a relationship doesn’t mean everything is right. Are you just existing instead of thriving?

I realized that I was allowing my life to live me; which is why I found myself in a job I didn’t love, a relationship that felt like I was wearing a heavy emotional trench coat, and a life devoid of dreams. When I called my architect up for duty, things began to change. I found my voice, and with that voice came a power and internal authority that had long been missing.

Being the architect of your own life forces you to start living life, not just letting life live you. You have to be present, engaged, and always committed to a bigger cause – your personal happiness! I had to draft a blueprint, like every good architect, that illustrated what it was that I wanted to build. (Permission, Pg. 7)

Do you believe you are the architect of your own life? Do you feel present, engaged and committed to your personal happiness? Most importantly, do you feel like you live life or does life live you? Happiness is a destination only you can build.

Drop a comment below and let me know what you are doing to design the life you want to live!

A Super Week at Super Bowl

I have spent the last week in Phoenix working on a Super Bowl corporate hospitality program for a client. It’s been a wonderful week of putting our event management and concierge skills into practice. We helped to welcome over 180 guests to Phoenix as guests of our client and have wine’d and dine’d them throughout the weekend.

Any chance I can get to combine my love of event planning, sports and hospitality into one project, gets me very excited!

Here’s a few images from my week of living in the desert!

Be the Super Bowl Appetizer Queen!

Are you headed to a Super Bowl party this weekend? Why not be the Queen of the appetizers? I could easily make a meal out of dips and spreads; in fact, I think there should just be a restaurant that serves only appetizers.

Over the holidays, I made this Hot Caramelized Onion, Bacon & Gruyere cheese dip, and it was smack your face delicious!

This recipe from Spicy Southern Kitchen will be a total touchdown at your Super Bowl party:

Hot Caramelized Onion Dip with Bacon and Gruyere
Recipe type: Appetizer
Ingredients
  • 4 bacon strips
  • 2 sweet onions, halved and thinly sliced
  • ¼ teaspoon sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon dry sherry
  • ¼ teaspoon tabasco
  • ½ teaspoon chopped fresh thyme
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere Cheese
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ½ cup mayo
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly, ground black pepper
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Cook bacon in a large nonstick skillet. Remove to a paper towel lined plate to cool. Crumble.
  3. Add onions, sugar, and salt to bacon fat in the skillet and cook over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes. Reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring often, until onions turn a deep golden brown color. This can take as long as 20 minutes. If onions start to burn, turn heat down to medium-low.
  4. Add sherry and cook 1 minute. Stir in thyme and tabasco. Remove from heat.
  5. Mix together sour cream and mayo in a medium bowl. Add crumbled bacon, cheese, onion mixture, and black pepper. Mix together well and transfer to a 2-cup baking dish.
  6. Bake 20 minutes, or until bubbly and golden brown on top.

Marsala – Pantone Color of the Year

Designers, event planners and creatives alike wait patiently at the end of each year for the announcement of Pantone’s Color of the Year. For 2015, the folks at Pantone have chosen Marsala. With it’s rich, hearty and natural earthiness, Marsala will translate through all areas of design, fashion and event production.

The Versatility of Marsala

  • Equally appealing to men and women, Marsala is a stirring and flavorful shade for apparel and accessories, one that encourages color creativity and experimentation
  • Flattering against many skin tones, sultry and subtle Marsala is a great go-to color for beauty, providing enormous highlight for the cheek, and a captivating pop of color for nails, shadows lips and hair.
  • Dramatic and at the same time grounding, the rich and full-bodied red-brown Marsala brings color warmth into home interiors
  • An earthy shade with a bit of sophistication, texture is the story in print and packaging. A matte finish highlights Marsala’s organic nature while adding a sheen conveys a completely different message of glamour and luxury.

Day #15: Living the Good Life – 30 Day Challenge

I admit, I’m not a huge bird lover. The whole thought of them flying over head and swirling sort of creeps me out. I try to subtly always move out of the path of birds when they are flying. I do, however, appreciate a bird that can talk and sing, so that was my motivation for visiting Free Flight, an exotic bird sanctuary in Del Mar.  Part of my 30 day challenge is to push myself into doing things that will make me uncomfortable.

Tucked next to a veterinarian, near the Del Mar Fair Grounds, sits a little refuge for exotic birds. Upon entry, (a $5 donation is required), you meet Kiki, the house resident and welcome committee. You can even go in her cage and encourage her to speak. If you are lucky, she will squawk you a ‘hello!

As you wonder around the little sanctuary, you are met with endless noise and screeching from the winged residents on display. Frequently, one of them will break into a mimic and you will hear either a car horn, a door bell, a “how you doing?” or an opera! By far, the talking birds were the highlight of the experience.

Kudos to Free Flight for offering a refuge for these beautiful creatures. I highly recommend this experience if you have kids. It’s an easy way to spend an hour.
